FAQs

Common questions, answered up front

A run-through of the questions that come up most often before someone books — quotes, scope, insurance, packing, international moves, storage, and what MTC's operating model means in practice.

How do I get a quote from MTC?

Send us your pickup and drop-off addresses, your rough scope, and when you’re aiming to move — either through the brief form at /quote, by email, or on the phone. A surveyor will be in touch promptly. For larger or international moves we’ll book a pre-move survey (video or in person) so the written quote reflects the real shape of the job.

Are the quotes binding, or just an estimate?

Every written quote sets out the scope, what is included, and the factors that could affect cost — for example access issues, additional items added after survey, or storage time. Once you’ve signed the quote it becomes the contract for the move. Anything outside that scope is agreed in writing before it’s added.

Do you handle international moves yourselves, or sub-contract them?

Our four supported European destinations — France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal — are handled by the same MTC team end-to-end. The crew who pack and load in the UK are the crew who deliver at the other end. We don’t hand off to local agents in destination countries; that’s an explicit choice to keep the experience consistent.

Which UK areas do you cover?

MTC works across the whole UK as a national-coverage brand. We pick up and deliver across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and we run international moves from any UK address into our four supported European countries. /areas-we-cover/ has more detail.

What's included in the quote, and what isn't?

A standard MTC quote includes the survey, the loading and transit, goods-in-transit and public liability insurance, and the delivery — including stairs, narrow access, and a reasonable amount of furniture reassembly. What sits outside scope (and is quoted separately if you want it) includes full or fragile-only packing, long-term storage, house clearance, customs handling for declared high-value items, and waste removal. The quote tells you which side of the line each item falls.

How does insurance work?

Goods-in-transit cover and public liability are included on every booked move. Higher-value items — antiques, art, instruments, jewellery — should be declared on the survey so they're itemised on the cover schedule. If something's outside the standard cover limit we'll tell you on the quote, and you can either declare it or arrange separate cover. Nothing is hidden in small print.

Can MTC move pianos, antiques, or specialist items?

Yes — pianos, antiques, art, and instruments are part of what we handle, but they need a specialist survey before they're quoted (so we can scope the right crew, crating, and lift gear). On international moves the customs paperwork is also slightly different for declared high-value items. Flag specialist items on the brief at /quote and the surveyor will pick those up first.

Do you handle packing, or do I pack myself?

Either. We can quote full packing (everything in the property, by our team, with materials), fragile-only packing (kitchen, glassware, art, instruments — the high-risk items only), or no packing at all if you'd rather do it yourself. The quote sets out which option you've chosen and what's included in it.

Can you store goods between addresses?

Yes. We offer short and long-term storage between addresses — useful when there's a gap between the move-out and move-in dates, or when an international move runs ahead of the destination property being ready. The quote sets out the storage rate and the access terms.

How does customs work for an international move to France, Italy, Spain, or Portugal?

Personal effects moving between the UK and the EU need a customs declaration, supporting paperwork (your transfer-of-residence documentation, an itemised inventory, and the relevant value declarations), and increasingly an EORI number depending on the import setup. MTC handles the declaration paperwork in-house as part of the international quote, and we'll tell you what you need to provide. We don't handle visa, residency, or tax matters — that's for your own legal/financial adviser.

Can you do an office or commercial move?

Yes — offices, retail fit-outs, light commercial relocations, and document or archive moves are all part of what we handle. Out-of-hours and weekend slots are available so trading hours can be protected. The commercial quote includes IT and desk reinstall where booked, asset inventory and labelling, and waste removal where you want the old space cleared as part of the move.

When can I book? Is there a minimum notice period?

We try to give honest answers about availability — sometimes we can fit a short-notice move in, especially mid-week and outside peak summer; sometimes the calendar is genuinely full and we'll say so. The fastest way to find out is to send the brief at /quote with your target date, and we'll confirm availability in writing.

What if my move date changes after I've booked?

Date changes are common — a property chain slips, a completion gets pushed, an EU buyer's notary date moves. Tell us as soon as you know and we'll re-book where possible. The booking contract sets out how date changes are handled and the conditions on any deposit, so look at that for the specifics; we apply it sensibly.

Is MTC a member of any trade body?

Where MTC holds trade-body memberships or accreditations they'll be listed in the footer and on the About page with the membership number. We don't list a credential we don't hold. If you're looking for a specific accreditation as a condition of booking, ask us before the quote and we'll be straight with you about whether we have it.

Question not answered here?

Send your move brief and ask in the notes — a surveyor will pick it up directly.
